An animal egg such as amphibian, mammalian or sea urchin egg receives only a single sperm at fertilisation. After binding of the first sperm, the egg is prevented from allowing the entry of additional sperm. In fact, polyspermy results in aborted development of the zygote. It has been generally accepted that a molecule(s) released from cortical granules participates in the block to polyspermy. As one such molecule, a cortical granule lectin has been isolated from unfertilised Xenopus eggs (Xenopus cortical granule lectin; XCGL). XCGL is released into the perivitelline space after fertilisation, and forms a complex with J1 jelly molecules to form an F layer, resulting in a block to additional sperm penetration.
A lectin molecule has also been purified from the eggs of several species of fish. The fish egg lectin is located in the cortical alveoli and is released from them after fertilisation. However, its biological function is unclear. We isolated cortical alveolar lectin from unfertilised eggs of Chinook salmon through affinity column chromatography (salmon egg lectin; SEL). The lectin activity was estimated by haemagglutination. The activity of the purified SEL was most strongly inhibited by L-rhamnose and D-galactose, but not by EDTA. Further analysis by C4 reverse-phase column chromatography using HPLC revealed that the lectin was composed of three subunit proteins: 24K, 26Ka and 26Kb proteins. In addition, we cloned cDNAs for them by RT-PCR. The deduced amino acid sequence of the 26Ka protein was homologous with that of the 26Kb protein (identity, 96.4%). Identities of the 24K with the 26Ka and the 26Kb proteins were 55.9% and 66.7%, respectively. A database search revealed that a lectin molecule similar to the SEL had been identified in Anthocidaris crassispina egg (sea urchin egg lectin; SUEL). The SUEL is composed of 105 amino acids, and is similar to both amino-terminal and carboxyl-terminal halves of the SELs. Thus, the SEL molecule is composed of two repeats of such SUEL-like domains, suggesting that the SEL gene was produced by gene duplication.

The International Mineralogical Association's approved amphibole nomenclature has been revised in order to simplify it, make it more consistent with divisions generally at 50%, define prefixes and modifiers more precisely and include new amphibole species discovered and named since 1978, when the previous scheme was approved. The same reference axes form the basis of the new scheme and most names are little changed but compound species names like tremolitic hornblende (now magnesiohornblende) are abolished and also crossite (now glaucophane or ferroglaucophane or magnesioriebeckite or riebeckite), tirodite (now manganocummingtonite) and dannemorite (now manganogrunerite). The 50% rule has been broken only to retain tremolite and actinolite as in the 1978 scheme so the sodic calcic amphibole range has therefore been expanded. Alkali amphiboles are now sodic amphiboles. The use of hyphens is defined. New amphibole names approved since 1978 include nyböite, leakeite, kornite, ungarettiite, sadanagaite and cannilloite. All abandoned names are listed. The formulae and source of the amphibole end member names are listed and procedures outlined to calculate Fe3+ and Fe2+ when not determined by analysis.

A fossil assemblage containing molluscs, mammals, insects, ostracodes, and plants has been recovered from a silt-filled depression near Lima, in west-central Illinois. The reversed remanent magnetic signature of the sediments and the temporal ranges of two mammals, Microtus paroperarius and Lasiopodomys deceitensis, constrain the age of the assemblage to between 730,000 and 830,000 yr B.P. The extent of isoleucine epimerization in the molluscan shell is consistent with this age interpretation. The fauna includes at least 43 taxa of beetles from 11 families, 35 nominal species of molluscs, and two genera of ostracodes. The mammals include two shrews, three rodents, and a rabbit. The plant macrofossils (no pollen recovered) include 25 species of seed plants and four kinds of terrestrial or wetland mosses. Most of the plant species identified still occur in the upper Midwest, although a few of the taxa are found mainly to the north of the site. The fauna is characterized by an almost total absence of true aquatic taxa. The association of both boreal and thermophilous faunal and floral elements suggest that summer temperatures were not greatly different from present ones, but cooler, moist areas must have been available to support the boreal elements. Local conditions were probably similar to those now found in northeastern Iowa, where rains blocks, fissures, and joints in carbonate bedrock serve as traps for debris accumulations, provide shade, and are kept cool and moist during the hot summer months by cold-air drainage and groundwater seepage. Summer mean temperature in these microhabitats was probably between 18 and 20°C, similar to temperatures that now occur near the northern hardwood spruce-fir transition in the eastern United States.

Rising demand for organic soybeans and high price premiums for organic products have stimulated producer interest in organic soybean production. However, organic soybean producers and those making the transition to organic production cite weed management as their main limitation. Current weed management practices heavily rely on cultivation. Repeated cultivation is expensive and has negative consequences on soil health. Research is needed to improve organic reduced tillage production. Rye cover crop mulches were evaluated for weed suppression abilities and effects on soybean yield. Experiments were planted in 2008 and 2009 at three sites. Rye was planted in the fall of each year and killed at soybean planting with a roller/crimper or flail mower, creating a thick weed-suppressing mulch with potential allelopathic properties. The mulch was augmented with one of three additional weed control tactics: preemergence (PRE) corn gluten meal (CGM), postemergence (POST) clove oil, or postemergence high-residue cultivation. Roll-crimped and flail-mowed treatments had similar weed suppression abilities at most sites. There were no differences between CGM, clove oil, or cultivation at most sites. Sites with rye biomass above 9,000 kg ha−1 of dry matter provided weed control that precluded soybean yield loss from competition. In Goldsboro 2008, where rye biomass was 10,854 kg ha−1 of dry matter, the soybean yield in the rolled rye treatment was not significantly different from the weed-free treatment, yielding at 2,190 and 2,143 kg ha−1, respectively. Likewise, no difference in soybean yield was found in Plymouth 2008 with a rye biomass of 9,256 kg ha−1 and yields of 2,694 kg ha−1 and 2,809 kg ha−1 in the rolled rye and weed-free treatments, respectively. At low rye biomass levels (4,450 to 6,606 kg ha−1), the rolled rye treatment soybean yield was 628 to 822 kg ha−1 less than the weed-free treatment. High rye biomass levels are critical to the success of this production system. However, high rye biomass was, in some cases, also correlated with soybean lodging severe enough to cause concern with this system.

Significant new opportunities for astrophysics and cosmology have been identified at low radio frequencies. The Murchison Widefield Array is the first telescope in the southern hemisphere designed specifically to explore the low-frequency astronomical sky between 80 and 300 MHz with arcminute angular resolution and high survey efficiency. The telescope will enable new advances along four key science themes, including searching for redshifted 21-cm emission from the EoR in the early Universe; Galactic and extragalactic all-sky southern hemisphere surveys; time-domain astrophysics; and solar, heliospheric, and ionospheric science and space weather. The Murchison Widefield Array is located in Western Australia at the site of the planned Square Kilometre Array (SKA) low-band telescope and is the only low-frequency SKA precursor facility. In this paper, we review the performance properties of the Murchison Widefield Array and describe its primary scientific objectives.

A sample of 60 patients selected at random from an adult population of 419 patients with end-stage renal disease was assessed for major depression. Diagnoses were based on a structured interview using DSM-III criteria. Eighteen patients (30%) met criteria for a major depression on a lifetime basis. In addition, depressive symptoms and treatment for each depressed patient are reported.

Summary
To begin our study of gang membership, we examine the prevalence and duration of gang membership for the total sample of the Rochester Youth Development Study and for its major demographic subgroups, compare gang members and nonmembers in terms of delinquent behavior, and then assess the proportionate contribution of gang members to the overall volume of crime.
The Prevalence of Gang Membership
Ever Prevalence
The prevalence of being a gang member at any point up to Wave 9, which essentially covers the high school years, is 30.9% of the total sample (Table 3.1). Thus, although most (69.1%) in this urban sample were not gang members, gang membership is not rare.
This prevalence rate is rather high when comparisons are made with results in other studies. For example, Klein (1971) estimated that in the four geographical areas covered by his study only about 6% of the gang-age youths in those areas were actually gang members. A similar approach, with similar results, has been used by other field researchers – for example, Moore (1978) and Vigil (1988). In a survey of eighth graders in 11 American cities, Esbensen and Winfree (1998) found that 11.8% of the respondents were gang members. Our estimate, based on a measure of lifetime prevalence rather than a point estimate or annual rate, highlights the importance of looking at gang membership as a trajectory that unfolds with age.

Summary
the previous analysis indicates that gang membership facilitates a broad range of delinquent behaviors including violence, drug use, and drug sales. When boys join gangs their delinquency increases and when they leave gangs their delinquency decreases. Here we focus on a related form of illegal behavior: owning and carrying illegal firearms. In particular, we are interested in the interplay between gang membership and patterns of owning and carrying guns. There are three general analytic questions. First, do gangs recruit those who carry illegal guns prior to gang membership, does gang membership enhance gun carrying, or are both processes at work? Second, do former gang members continue carrying guns as a result of their gang experience? Finally, what is the joint impact of gang membership and gun involvement on delinquency, drug use, and drug sales? Because research has shown that illegal gun carriers are more active in criminal activity (Lizotte et al., 2000) and that gang members show higher levels of criminal activity (Chapter 6), we hypothesize that gang members who also carry guns will have higher levels of criminal activity than one would predict from either factor alone. We conduct all these analyses for two types of illegal gun carriers: those who carry illegal guns but do not own them, and those who carry illegal guns that they own. The distinction is important, especially at these ages and especially for gang members.

Summary
having provided a description of gang members by examining their demographic characteristics, we now extend this description considerably by identifying risk factors for gang membership. After examining how antecedent characteristics and attributes affect the likelihood that an individual will join a gang, we examine the ability of these same risk factors to distinguish transient from stable gang members. Following these bivariate analyses, we turn to multivariate models and examine how experiencing multiple risk affects the odds of joining a street gang.
A Risk Factor Approach
Risk factors are “individual or environmental hazards that increase an individual's vulnerability to negative developmental outcomes” (Small and Luster, 1994: 182; see also Farrington, 2000; Werner and Smith, 1982). Consistent with the multidimensionality of the life-course approach, risk factor models assume that there are multiple, and often overlapping, risk factors in an individual's background that lead to adverse outcomes. In the terms of developmental psychopathology, outcomes are characterized by equifinality, or multiple pathways to the same outcome (Cicchetti and Rogosch, 1996). Furthermore, this approach assumes that cumulative risk, that is, risk that occurs in many different life domains, is most strongly related to adversity (Werner and Smith, 1982).
Identifying risk factors, especially those that occur early in the life course, has several theoretical and practical advantages (Farrington, 2000). Theoretically, identifying factors that increase risk suggests fruitful areas for exploration in more formal causal analyses. It also helps in isolating variables that mediate or translate increased vulnerability into actually experiencing the outcome.

Summary
Up to this point the analysis has focused on the antecedents of gang membership, examining risk factors for and causal processes associated with joining a gang. Now we examine whether membership in a juvenile street gang alters the short-term behavior patterns and the long-term life-course development of gang members. The first set of issues we address concerns the extent to which the gang actually facilitates various forms of deviant behavior.
In Chapter 3 we demonstrated that gang members in Rochester have significantly higher rates of delinquency than nonmembers. This finding confirms results from earlier observational studies (Hagedorn, 1998; Klein, 1971; Miller, 1966; Moore, 1978; Taylor, 1990), from studies using official data (Cohen, 1969; Klein et al., 1986; Maxson and Klein, 1990), and from those using survey techniques (Fagan, 1989, 1990; Fagan et al., 1986; Short and Strodtbeck, 1965; Tracy, 1979). We also demonstrated that gang members account for a disproportionate share of the crime problem relative to their representation in the general population. Because gangs clearly connote groups that have a deviant or criminal orientation, a strong relationship between gang membership and high rates of involvement in delinquency and drug use is hardly surprising. What these studies do not identify, however, are the social processes that bring about the association between gang membership and higher rates of delinquency. As Fagan has noted, “it is uncertain whether the differences reflect the positive correlation between group crime and violence, features of the gang itself, or the state of social controls in the inner cities where gangs are most evident” (1990: 186).
